I am a 19 year old girl and I believe I have had on-off depression since I was 14 or so. I never have had any friends, I never go anywhere on weekends, and I feel like I grew up too fast. I work full time at a cafe and it wears me out. I noticed my depression became worse after I made friend’s with a nice young man then he suddenly stopped talking to me. It was the last straw I suppose. Ever since, I feel like I’m stuck in a box. I lost all hope for a future. I always longed for and dreamed of being someone’s lover, homemaker, and most of all a mother. I didn’t want to be anything else, just that. Now I don’t see that anymore. I give up on my dream. Because it isn’t happening. If I cannot and never have had friends how the hell can I have a boyfriend or much less someone to love me?
I just want to die. I feel very lonely and hopeless. I have turned to suicidal thoughts. I also cannot drive due to being a loser and scardy cat of driving, I have no plans of college because I never wanted school, just to be a mom, and no money.
I do have a wonderful family and parents. I told them today that I am so depressed I want to die, and admitted I was selfish and wrong. They agreed. I feel like a terrible person. I don’t think they realize why exactly and just how sad I am.

When you learn a language, two things you can’t do without are books and audio-visual media. Books can teach you mostly on written text, including pronunciation guide in purely written text, while audio-visual media, including DVDs, CD-ROMs, and DVD-ROMs, teach you mostly in oral language, including pronunciation, and not much of written language. (The Rosetta Stone is considered audio-visual media.) When you shop for language learning materials, it is best to buy a set of language learning kit that comes with both books and audio-visual media (DVDs, CD-ROMs, and/or DVD-ROMs) that are correlating to each other in the sequence of chapters and sections. This is the easiest way to self-learn a foreign language because you can study the pronunciation from audio-visual media while you read the book to learn the written text, plus you can follow the chapters and sections easily. Otherwise, you can buy a book and an audio-visual media separately. The difference is you will have to work a little bit harder compare to learning with a kit with both types of materials combined. You also may have to do some bookmarking for reference when you use a book while listening or watching audio-visual media.
Also, there are three more things you can seek help to when learning a new language. These are IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet), internet, and the people whom you trust the most. Some languages have phonetic alphabet that is not found in most languages, which makes most people having difficulty in mastering some of those languages without knowing the exact pronunciation first. Even though you have overcome pronunciation difficulty, I suggest you to use IPA as a guide for correct pronunciation. If you can find a foreign language material that uses IPA, I encourage you to buy it, or at least borrow it. Besides major languages, there are some good numbers of books and other media materials that will teach you minor languages in libraries and bookstores. Check you local bookstores and libraries first. If you can’t find it, try going to large bookstores or libraries in large cities where there are more choices than the ones at suburban or rural areas. Also, if you are a university student or you have access to borrow materials from a university, the libraries in universities (including Stanford, Harvard, and Yale) are truly excellent sources for finding materials for learning both major and minor foreign languages.
Alternatively, go to Wikipedia or Omniglot on the internet (I will get to the details of Omniglot later) and find the language you are learning; many languages now have pronunciation guide in IPA. Just look for the pronounced words closed by two square brackets like these [ ] on most webpages, including Omniglot, or two slashes like these / / on many webpages of Wikipedia but not in Omniglot.

If you have family members, relatives or friends who are at least bilingual, who are fluent in the language you are planning to learn, and whom you can put your trust upon, I encourage you to ask them for help. Make sure you tell them that you are interested in learning their language and want to practice the conversation in their language. Once they agree with you, this is your opportunity to improve a foreign language by practicing with them. When there is an opportunity, grab it as soon as possible before you lose it.
The correct combination of resources is one thing, but the method of learning is another matter. When learning, don’t just learn with diligence; learn with your planned strategies and tactics. With tactics, you are using your skills to enhance your learning and overcoming the obstacles. Before you start learning, you need to understand yourself. You need to know how you learn when you learn. There are some people who can learn by reading text, some who can learn visually (through illustrations and charts), and some who can learn by listening, and so on. If you want to know about how you learn, I recommend you to understand theory of multiple intelligences by Howard Gardner. You will be surprised by how much you haven’t known about your secret self.

Nobody is born with talents; talents are created through learning knowledge continuously and using your knowledge wisely and appropriately.
Finally, the most important ingredient in successful learning is passion. You need to maintain your interest in the language you are learning. The most important thing you need to remember while learning any foreign language is you learn and apply with confidence (maintain your morale), determination (keep up with your good fight against all odds), and patience (control yourself even during a difficult time). Learn to make mistakes; you can’t improve yourself without making mistakes first. Practice frequently with full consistency and you will overcome any obstacles, large or small, in life, hence making you better in using another language while practicing, whether you are at home, work, or traveling. Don’t worry if you are a slow learner; everyone learns in different speed and style and learning a new language takes time. Also, always manage to use your native language and second language(s) equally in respect to your schedule so you will retain you native language and second language(s) easily.
You can learn as many languages as you need. The sky is the limit! The more languages you learn, the better you can communicate with others, particularly in international traveling and employment. (In other words, “The more, the merrier!”) If you can handle this, do it; otherwise, learn one language at a time until you are ready for the next one.
Most importantly, you must be proficient in reading, writing, speaking, and listening in each language to be considered as fluent. If you are not proficient in at least one of the four categories of a particular language, then you are not fluent in the particular language, even though you can only speak another language without flaws. Imagine you are lost and you try to find a place to stay in Russia. The address you have is in English but the street names are in Russian. It is really horrendous when you can’t read Russian, especially when you are stranded in the middle of the frigid, winter night (brrrr!). So, therefore, learn to read and write just as you learn to speak and listen, even if it is difficult. Also, be sure to master every aspect of the language you are learning, including pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, and expression. Just don’t make the same mistake more than once and you will do fine later in life.

I totally agree. As a parent I know what is going to affect the way my child will play with his younger sister, how he will treat her, what sort of things he will see on t.v. and try to copy them at a later date. If there is something he wants to copy from a television program, let it be how to cook something or how to make something using simple household items that are safe, not trying to make agressive actions towards others.
I had to tell my parents I am an atheist and they hate me for that. Then I had to tell them Im going to the military after college which I did, now they even hate me more for it.

we have a 2 week holiday coming up and my girlfriend had the nice idea of going to Italy and staying at her brothers because it would be a nice break from school. the issue is, my parents are very restricting and protective when it comes to me doing anything “risk taking” because im their only child. when i asked them if i could travel with her before, they responded with a vigorous “no WAY” and their argument was that i was still young, and that if anything happened to me (car accident etc..) it would equal death to them since i would be in a foreign country far away from where they are. i responded to that by telling them that if i were to get into a car accident, that it can happen at any place and any time, not necessarily over seas, but they would stick to their point that my absence causes them to get overly stressed and worried. my mom starts to make me feel guilty by using her heart problems against me and i just end up staying quiet even though i got disappointed at their lack of trust. (they claim they trust me fully, but i disagree to some level)
all of this happened last year when my girlfriend went for the first time and i wanted to go with her. They said that 16 was too young and that when she goes again later on they would re-think the issue. I understood them before because 16 is a young age in the eyes of a parent even if i do feel like im responsible enough to go, and also seeing that im with someone i, and my parents fully trust.
but at the moment im 17. time has passed, i do feel more mature than before and i technically am much more responsible that other people my age. i have a job at an online magazine and i juggle that along with my exams and perform really good in school. im not a “party animal” as they say, im not involved in drugs/smoking/alcohol, and im also not struggling with peer pressure. also, have been with my girlfriend for more than 2 years so i feel very stable. you can exclude any idea of teenage stereotypes.
what is your point of view on this? would you let your 17 year old go on this trip? i do see my parents’ point of view, but do you think they are exaggerating? do you think i am exaggerating? i feel like i have been working really hard this whole time to please my parents and to not have them worry about any of my issues, and i never broke a promise that i made to them. they even have a curfew for me and i stick to that even if none of my friends have it. i just want to have a little fun..

My parents know and trust my girlfriend fully, and her bother as well. they have no problem with me staying over at his place when we go to italy, even if it’s a one-bedroom apartment. i have slept over at my girlfriends’ many times and seeing that we are two girls, i don’t think the sex would be a primary problem since there are obviously no life-changing outcomes coming from it. they are going to be paying for the ticket, even if i wanted to pay for it, they refused.. (this is what i mean by over restricting)
their problem isn’t about with the people or sleeping arrangements, it’s ONLY concerning me being alone and without them.. it’s their “worry” and “stress.”

My dad bought me plane tickets to go to London by myself when I was 14, but the major difference here is that I stayed with my Aunt! I’d be really hesitant in relying on SIBLINGS (even if he were my own kid!) to care for my teenager. I’m sure he is a responsible person, and I wouldn’t be saying this with any intention to be mean to him or you guys…but I just wouldn’t feel comfortable about it. And, as silly as it sounds, I would also say “You’re 17…you only have one more year to go…go when you’re 18!”
I would STILL prefer that you be older…like 21…if you’re going to a place where you don’t know anyone, but hey…you have your rights at 18 and I can’t stop you!
Maybe I’m just a little over-protective after seeing Taken! But just remember…your parents aren’t doing this to be mean…they’re doing it because they think it’s the best thing for you. They think they’re protecting you. This isn’t a 3 day weekend trip to a place that’s 4 hours away. This is a trip to an entirely different country, where the rules are different, and the dangers may be increased! If something goes wrong, they can’t just hop in a car to rescue you! It sounds silly, like they’re exagerating on the “things that can go wrong”, but I think it’s very reasonable to think about these things.
I remember being a teenager (I’m only 25!) and feeling like my parents were just being jerks when they denied me the opportunity for stuff like this. But believe me, when you get older, you’ll look back in the same way I am now. You’ll understand later!
